The Northern Kentucky Council of the Blind advocates for blind and visually impaired people. Here are some examples of ways NKCB has assisted blind and visually impaired people.
1. The Northern Kentucky Council of the Blind is proud to announce the installation of a new audible pedestrian traffic signal at the intersection of 26th and Madison in Covington. The signal announces the street that is safe to cross, and has a locator tone so that blind pedestrians can find the push-button that activates the signal. Thanks to all who assisted with this great project.
2. The Northern Kentucky Council of the Blind knows that blind and visually impaired students need accessible textbooks in order to be able to gain a good education and prepare themselves for future employment. NKCB advocates for accessible textbooks, including electronic formats readable by adaptive technology. NKCB knows that accessible textbooks must be available in a timely manner so that blind and visually impaired students can participate fully and equally in their classes and training programs.
3. NKCB believes that blind and visually impaired people should be able to identify their own money without help from others. Color and size of bills are two ways money can be changed.
4. NKCB members are actively involved in advocating for improved public transportation, both throughout the metropolitan northern Kentucky area and between Kentucky cities. The Northern Kentucky Council knows that, without affordable, frequent and reliable transportation, blind and visually impaired people cannot have access to the education, jobs, and basic community services they need.
5. Pedestrian safety is a major issue with the Northern Kentucky Council of the Blind. NKCB members know that being able to travel safely and avoid pedestrian accidents is key to independence and equality for blind and visually impaired people. NKCB works for more sidewalks, more audible pedestrian signals, more detectable warnings on curb cuts, and audible indicators on quiet cars.
